IPv6: getting over the first hurdles
Summary
Jens Link introduces IPv6 and explains addresses, prefixes, automatic configuration and the practical differences from familiar IPv4 operations. IPv6 works more easily as a new operating model than as an enlarged IPv4. Experimenting early prevents a hectic migration later under address pressure.
Ideas
- IPv6 separates global, local and link-local addresses through clearly recognisable ranges.
- Thinking in prefixes replaces many single-address tricks carried over from IPv4.
- Router advertisements distribute basic network parameters without requiring classic DHCP.
Recommendations
- Build a dual-stack test network with its own firewall and DNS resolution.
- Practise diagnosis with ip, ping6, traceroute6 and packet captures.
