Linux on Snapdragon X Elite: ARM64 notebooks in focus
Summary
Together with TUXEDO, Linaro describes the path to everyday Linux on Snapdragon X Elite notebooks. The prototype demonstrated USB-C with a monitor, input devices and simultaneous charging. During the demonstration, FEX-EMU ran playable x86-64 3D games.
Ideas
- Booting a kernel does not yet prove complete notebook support.
- Cooperation with manufacturers provides device knowledge for drivers that can go upstream.
- USB-C has to coordinate data, display output and charging at the same time.
- FEX-EMU extends ARM64 desktops with selected x86-64 applications.
- Distributions turn kernel patches into installable and updatable systems.
Insights
- Notebook maturity arises from integrating many small hardware functions.
- Upstream code lowers the long-term maintenance effort of every distribution involved.
- Emulation can ease platform transitions but does not replace native packages.
Facts
- In 2025 Ubuntu and Fedora were working on broader ARM64 notebook support.
Recommendations
- Before buying, check suspend, audio, camera, Wi-Fi and external displays.
- Prefer devices with publicly maintained upstream patches and distribution support.
