CmdrTaco leaves SD

Summary

Rob Malda says goodbye to SD and looks back on fourteen years of an early, community-moderated technology platform. Online communities depend on software, rules and credible cultural leadership at the same time. A founder's departure tests whether a platform was carried by an institution or by a person.

Ideas

  • SD combined editorial selection with discussions and user-driven moderation.
  • The platform shaped terms, traffic spikes and debates of early net culture.
  • A personal project became long-lived infrastructure for a technical community.

Recommendations

  • Preserve historical posts and discussions at stable addresses.
  • Document moderation principles independently of individual long-standing operators.

RFC 8890: The internet is for end users

RFC 8890 states as a guideline that internet standards should prioritise the benefit and self-determination of end users. Protocol design is never completely value-neutral. Open networks only stay open if user interests are explicitly represented.

RFC 1459: IRC: Open real-time communication

RFC 1459 documents the Internet Relay Chat protocol for federated servers, channels and direct messages. Simple text protocols can carry communities for decades. Federation distributes operations but requires shared conventions.

RFC 1149: IP over carrier pigeons

RFC 1149 humorously describes the transport of IP datagrams by carrier pigeons and was later actually tried out. April Fools’ jokes can convey protocol properties surprisingly clearly. Bandwidth and latency are independent quantities.
